Picture Book Mentorship - Thanks for Applying

Dear Future Picture Book Author,

Thanks to everyone who applied for my free picture book writing mentorship. After reading over one-hundred emails and fifty manuscripts, I’ve selected a mentee. I’ll be working for the next six months with Tara Luebbe of South Carolina.

Authors are constantly told—usually after a rejection—that this is a highly subjective industry and it is. (Insert eye roll.) I connected with Tara’s letter and her two sample manuscripts. That doesn’t mean other candidates weren’t just as good or qualified. It’s something I felt in my gut.

Due to my lack of backbone (and some technical glitches), I’m not sending out “rejection” emails to all who applied. I wish everyone the best and thanks for taking the time to write me.  Keep writing, y’all. That’s the only secret to this industry. You just can’t stop.

Warmest regards,
Stacy

The Dino Files Giveaway

It's finally here! I'm living out my Oprah dream. "You get a book. You get a book! Everyone gets a book!" And by everyone, I mean I am giving 25 autographed copies of The Dino Files: A Mysterious Egg to one lucky classroom.

And there's more...

Along with the 25 copies of The Dino Files, each students will receive a sticker, bookmark, pencil, dino tattoos, mini figure, and a plastic dinosaur egg. The teacher will also receive a $25 gift card to use for snacks (can you say P*A*R*T*Y?). The fun will wrap up with a Skype visit with the author (that's me!).

Anyone over 18 can enter the The Dino Files Giveaway. Teachers, librarians, parents, neighbors, grandparents, anyone. BUT the prize is intended for a classroom. The prize will be delivered by US mail to any school in the USA. (Sorry, I can't include homeschools at this time.)

Thanks for understanding!

Mentorship Update

Wow! I had 106 people apply for my little mentorship program. This is overwhelming. I honestly thought there would be 12 to 20 applicants. I have read all the emails once; I’m now sorting through them. (Which is incredibly hard! Making this decision will be the hardest part of this program, I’m certain.) I hope to be making a decision by the end of next week. But no guarantees. Like my dad always tells me, Man plans, God laughs.

Just for fun, here are some of the things I’ve learned from reading all 106 emails.

1. The favorite dinosaur was the t-rex. Brachiosaurus was second. Earnest/Dear Santasaurus was also a frequent answer. (Who doesn’t like a little kissing-up?) Other fun answers included pteranodon or pterodactyl (technically not a dinosaur), birds (which are related to dinosaurs), thesaurus (haha), and “none” (which is crazy to me, but I like the honesty).

2. A lot of writers are vegetarians. At least 12 authors claimed to be herbivores and usually liked meat-averse dinosaurs.

3. All but 1 applicant was a member of SCBWI. Not that I can verify if anyone was a member or not. (Not that I’d want to.) But I strongly encourage every kidlit author to join. Go to a local conference. Read The Book cover to cover! (It’s online. I found my agent through The Book, and then she found me through the slush pile.)

4. So many people talked about the tragedies in their lives. Widows/widowers, cancer, children with disease, unemployment, divorce, and other incredible hardship. It’s heartbreaking. I wish I could do more than offer a single person a mentorship. So many are in my prayers and thoughts.

5. I have a new perspective on what agents’ and editors’ inboxes must look like. My 14-year-old read all the emails with me. After about 10 in a row, she’d suggest “deleting” any email that required us to scroll down. (Don’t worry. We didn’t. We read all of them. Even the ones that required us to scroll and scroll and scroll.) But remember, less is more. White space is good.

6. Most of the emails were from women. At least 90%. Most applicants had children. I’d guess 95%. And maybe 30% had grandkids. (I started tallying all this up, but got lazy. Now I’m estimating.)

7. The applicants came from all over the US and at least 1 military base. There were quite a few from New Jersey and Wisconsin. Go Packers!

8. I’ve met at least 15 applicants. Mostly at SCBWI conferences and WOW retreats, but also at parties.

9. There was 1 who professed to be an engineer. (As I was in a formal life.)

10. And there was 1 joke applicant from a Rita Onna (meant to be pronounced like write-a on-a). I fell for the gag for about two sentences. Then I realized it was my own kids. And it really made me laugh. (Rita Onna admits to writing mostly fan fiction. Her favorite: Magic Tree House—The Teen Years. Jack and Annie “tots belong together” after they learn they aren’t actually brother and sister.)

Thanks to all who sent emails. I will reply to the group once I make a decision.

Happy 2016, y’all!

PS:
11. No one mentioned Hamilton (my current obsession) in his/her email. That would have made this decision a lot easier. (Kidding! But if you have a spare ticket... KIDDING! Sort of.)

Dear Future Picture Book Author

Dear Future Picture Book Author,

“If you’re lucky enough to do well, it’s your responsibility to send the elevator back down.” I love this quote from Kevin Spacey. And while I don’t consider myself at the top, I have been very fortunate since signing with my agent, Lori Kilkelly, two and a half years ago. In 2016, I have six books coming out (three picture books and three chapter books). Those books will be followed by six more picture books in the following years. Call it fortunate or lucky or blessed, my dream of a career writing for kids has come true.

Now it’s my chance to send the elevator back down. I’d like to offer a (free!) mentorship to an unpublished picture book writer.

What:   I’ll assist one writer with his/her PB manuscripts. I will also answer questions about the industry and help with query letters and pitches.

When:  Over a six month period (approx. January-June 2016)

Who:    I’ll be the mentor. The mentee should be someone who has been writing PB manuscripts for at least a year. Must be over 18, living in the USA (so we can talk on the phone), and serious about writing. This is for those who write picture books—no novels, no easy readers, no chapter books, no magazine articles. I prefer to work with fiction or a combination of fiction and non-fiction, and I’m not the ideal mentor for an author who writes in rhyme.

How:    The writer will email me PB manuscripts for critique. I will write my suggestions, send them back, and then allow for a follow-up phone call. We will work on a maximum of three manuscripts and one query letter.  The writer may also send me questions at any time.

Why:    I actually like to critique. (Warning: I can be brutal!)   And see Kevin Spacey quote above. Also, I expect the writer to send the elevator back down when he/she reaches his/her goal.

Cost:     Free! No purchase necessary. You don’t even need to “like” me on Facebook or Twitter.

Please Note: While I’m willing to help a new author with craft and share my industry experience, I am not offering to recommend the writer to my agent or any of my editors. And there is absolutely no guarantee of success. Working with me will not land you an agent or get you published.

I reserve the right to change these guidelines at any time.

How to Apply:
Simple. Send me an e-mail (author.stacymcanulty@gmail.com) and tell me why you’re interested in working with me. (Subject line should read: Future Picture Book Author) And I need to know the answer to these two questions.
·         * How long have you been writing picture books? (Minimum one year.)
·         * How many picture book manuscripts have you written? (Minimum of 8.)

And here are some other questions you might want to answer.
·         * What organizations do you belong to? SCBWI? 12x12? PiBoIdMo? WOW?
·         * Why do you want to write for kids?
·         * What have been your struggles so far?
·         * What interests you?
·         * What’s your favorite dinosaur?

I’ll be accepting emails starting today until December 30th. I may follow-up and ask to see a sample manuscript. I will make the final decision in January.  This final decision is mine alone and will be based on my opinion of who I think I can best assist.

Feel free to send questions by email (or comment below).

Cheers,
Stacy McAnulty

#99DaysOfDinos

My first chapter book--THE DINO FILES--hits shelves on January 19, 2016. As part of the pre-launch fun, I've been Tweeting pics of all my dinosaur belongings using the hashtag #99daysofdinos. Yesterday was day 33. I'm a third of the way through and wanted to share the fun pics I've posted so far.
